The DMZ

More pictures.  These are from our trip to the DMZ.  The experience was fascinating, and heartbreaking, and a bit bizarre.

That's North Korea in the distance.

Miles felt like the tour had a bit of a Disney Land aura

Prayer flags at Imjingak, a park and memorial built to console separated family members

The Joint Security Area.  The building in the back ground is North Korean; the blue buildings are where the two sides meet for official business.

A South Korean soldier inside the main conference building

The South Korean soldier on the left is standing halfway behind the building in case the North Koreans suddenly open fire--that position makes him a smaller target

A memorial for the two U.S. Army officers killed by North Korean soldiers in the 1976 Axe Murder Incident

The northernmost rail station in South Korea.  The funds for the station were raised through private donations.

The empty station, complete with a never-used customs room, seems like an expensive exercise in optimism.

  1. My darling,
I am surprised to see that DMZ is pretty much open to everyone. That's amazing. They even open the conference building at DMZ! Amazing. That was unthinkable when I was there. The train station is also new. I pray that someday the station would be crowded with people visiting families in North Korea. 7 brothers and sisters of my father were left behind when he came down to south around 1950. Never heard from them. What a tragedy! North Korea still teaches that south invaded north first. And sadly there are many in south who believe that. Korea now is not the same country that I know. But it is still the country that I love the most. Thank you for the pictures. Love, ommah & appah
